abstract: In the study the bruise susceptibility of apples in impact loading condition on the basis of strength index called bruise threshold was determined. The bruise threshold is defined as a drop height at which bruise of a sample at a specific mass, shape and impact surface appears. To establish the bruise threshold twofold impact was applied for drops at height range from 4 to 22 mm. To carry out the impact research, a pendulum device was used, in which an apple was an impactor which struck at a rigid force sensor. The bruise threshold values were determined for apples of Melrose variety. The influence of four-week storage time and apple mass was established on the bruise threshold values and the parameters of reaction force course. As a result of the measurements carried out, it turned out that concluding the bruise threshold value on the basis of variance of the force courses measured during the experiments is not sufficient. A correction was suggested for the methodical assumptions, consisting in bruise threshold method complementing the analysis of reaction force in time.
