abstract:
The aim of the research was to evaluate susceptibility of hard wheat grains to macro- and micro-damages resulting from the dynamic wheat-metal contact. The damage, understood as breaking continuity of grain tissue as a result of impact from external forces, can influence reduction of grain technological and reproductive value. Grain from two foreign cultivars: Astrodur and Buck Cristal were used in the experiments together with 11 breeding lines of Triticum durum Desf. obtained from the Institute of Genetics and Plant Breeding of the University of Agriculture in Lublin. Common wheat (cv. Opatka) was included in the present experiment to show for comparison. Wheat grain was subjected to dynamic loading in the laboratory conditions in the Institute of Agrophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Lublin.
The results of the experiments indicate quite considerable differences in the number of damages both between the objects and the impact places. The contact of the metal parts of the machine with the embryos did not show clear damages of the whole grains but only of the embryos. The largest number of broken and half-grains were found during the impact on the back.
