abstract:
Silver fir belongs to the main tree forest species in Poland. Market demand for this species seeds is as high as about 17 ton per year. Seeds storage as well as new production technologies for the seedling material require a qualified sowing material. For the mechanical seed selection, knowledge about their fundamental physical parameters is indispensable. Relatively low vitality of the Silver seeds and small difference between physical properties of vital and dead seeds make an application of precise selection equipment and a multistage selection process necessary. Results of measurements of some basic selection features of the Silver fir seeds such as: weight, mass density, elasticity, geometric properties and critical speed have been presented in relation to theirs vitality. A method for increasing seedling germination capacity and determining the amount of vital seed losses when using a given selection criterion has also been described.
