abstract: Nitrogen migration to the Upper Narew Valley as a result of sheet erosion and possibility its reduction in the riparian zone were assessed. The nitrogen loads transported from arable land on the valley slopes depend on the slope angle and crops and amount from 700 to 2700 g N ha-1 r-1. This low values are related to low Ntot content in Ap horizons of studied soils and small intensity of sheet erosion. Grassed buffer strips are effective in restricting pollutant transfer with runoff. Mineralization and leaching of N species can contribute in the eutrophication of these riparian zones.
