abstract: In the study the authors have made an attempt at assessing the performance of unique anti-erosion protective installations realized at the Olszanka object near Krasnystaw. Particular emphasis was placed on the possibility of application of the system in question for minimization of the effect of area contamination of agricultural origin on the environment.
The Olszanka object, with a surface area of about 180 hectares, is a farm with intensive type of production in the area of agricultural crops and pomiculture. It is located in the Lublin Upplands, in the Działy Grabowieckie region. The area of the farm, with slopes up to 15%, is covered with loess formations of considerable depth. The area is characterized by a dense network of ravines. The high water erosion hazard present in the area required the application of a number of protective measures. The assessment of their performance was facilitated by the existence of technical documentation, expert opinions, and technical designs, covering the period of the past forty years.
The study presented herein was realized by the authors’ team in the years 2001-2004 basing on the research project No. 1564/T09/2001/21 of the State Committee for Scientific Research. The study covered geodetic, meteorological and soil moisture monitoring, and, though to a lesser degree, monitoring of the chemical composition of precipitation water running off the area. Laboratory and field experiments permitted the parameterization of the area studied, which formed the basis for subsequent numerical model studies.
Within the scope of the study an attempt was made at developing original, and utilizing existing simulation models of erosion, flow of precipitation water down slopes and in the valley, dynamics of precipitation water infiltration, dynamics of soil moisture changes, and migration of pollutants within the soil-plant-atmosphere system.
Implementation of the above models permitted a multi-aspect assessment of the effect of the integrated system of anti-erosion protection and protection against the expansion of area contamination onto the environment. Also, it permitted the development of a method for the design of such protection systems.
