abstract: The material under study was grain from two classes of five cultivars of winter wheat. Control grain came from plots where crops grew in natural conditions, while scab damaged grain came from plots where inoculation with conidia of Fuzarium culmorum. was applied during flowering. From lots of grain of each cultivar and class, random samples of several hundreds of kernels were taken and measurements of single kernel mass, diameter, moisture, hardness, volume and density were performed with SKCS4100 and “in-house”-made air pycnometers. Mean values and standard deviations obtained for particular features and samples were analysed by linear discriminate analysis (LDA), and some results were illustrated in terms of principal components. LDA results allowed us to calculate Fisher ratios, for all possible combinations of the measured features, in order to evaluate separation between scab damaged and control grain. Several sets of features were characterized with Fisher ratios that suggested a possibility for distinguishing between damaged and control grain.
