abstract: A two-year field experiment (2005-2006) were conducted to determine the effect of 28% N urea-ammonium nitrate liquid fertilizer (UAN) and oil adjuvants on Chenopodium album, Echinochloa crus-galli and total weed control with mesotrione (Callisto 100 SC) applied in maize. The herbicide Callisto 100 SC, at recommended rate (1.5 L ha-1) and reduced rates (1.0 and 0.75 L ha-1), and two adjuvants: Atpolan BIO 80 EC (methylated seed oil) and Atpolan 80 EC (paraffin oil) were applied with or without UAN at rate 4 L ha-1. Mesotrione at all rates, with or without any tank-mix adjuvants, controlled Chenopodium album from 96 to 100%. UAN differed in enhancement of mesotrione phytotoxicity to Echinochloa crus-galli and was most effective in mixture with paraffin oil. However, mesotrione efficacy in total weed infestation was less effective with paraffin oil than with methylated seed oil. Addition of UAN plus paraffin oil or methyleted seed oil to the reduced rates of mesotrione increased corn cob yield to the level when mesotrione was applied at conventional rate without any adjuvant.
