abstract: The 2002-2004 study evaluated the leaf area index (LAI) of spring wheat in four crop rotations. A computer scanner and suitable software were used to analyse the surface area of leaves. It was shown that the LAI coefficient depended on crop rotations, growth stages and positions of leaves on plant. Cultivation of spring wheat in monoculture diminished the value of the LAI index in relation to crop rotations. Largest surface area was produced by leaves in the stage of earing, smaller in the stage of blooming, and significantly the smallest in the period of milk stage.
