abstract: The investigations aimed at evaluating the quality of carrot root harvesting with Alina and Simon single-row harvesters. The research was conducted at 3 working speeds, i.e. 1.5; 2.0 and 2.5 km h-1. The test with Simon harvester was conducted at Carotan variety while the test with Alina harvester was conducted at Nerac variety. The quality of carrot root harvested was evaluated in both cases on the basis of root losses and damages caused by the harvesters. The percentage of losses caused by the failure of the machine to uproot the carrot from the soil ranged from 1.7 to 3.5% in the case of Simon harvester, and from 2.0 to 4.3% for Alina harvester. In the material collected with Simon harvester at the studied working speeds, the largest group of damaged roots were the broken (22.1-45.6%) and fractured ones (1.7-4.1%), whereas in the case of Alina harvester most damaged roots were bruised (23.2- 26.7%) or had their heads chopped off (1.2-6.9%). The lowest overall root damages for Simon harvester (27.4%) and Alina harvester (30.2%) were achieved at the speeds of 1.5 km h-1 and 2.5 km h-1 respectively. The roots with leaves not sheared off constituted 1.3-3.4% of the material collected with Simon harvester and 0.3-1.9% of the material collected with Alina harvester. The share of dirt in the material collected with Simon and Alina harvesters was respectively 1.2-2.6% and 1.2-1.6%. To recapitulate, the studied harvesters achieved a relatively comparable quality of carrot root harvesting.
