Effect of amount and distribution of precipitation during vegetation on growth, devel-opment and yielding of determinate and traditional faba bean varieties

abstract: The experiments were conducted in the years 2001-2003 at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Grabów which belongs to the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation – National Research Institute in Puławy. Two varieties of faba bean: Nadwiślański – traditional and Tim – self-determinated variety were studied in this research. En experiment was established with split-block design (split-plot – split-block), at four replications, on good wheat complex soil. The amont and distribution of precipitations in particular years of the research had a big influence on the formation of morphological features of faba bean. Shortage of precipitations in spring-summer period negatively affected the increase of plants height and limited their leaf area. The analysis of the effect of weather course on seed yield of faba bean allow to find that faba bean yield was in the greatest degree dependent on the amount of precipitations in June, i.e. in the period of faba bean flowering. The decrease of seed yield in the years with unfavourable weather course for faba bean cultivation was caused by reduction of its structure features, and first of all by decrease of pods number per plant and number of sees per plant, because the mass of 1000 seeds did not change significantly. Faba bean traditional variety Nadwiślański appeared to be less sensitive to periodic water deficit in soil than the determinate Tim variety.
