abstract: Mineral oils are commonly used for the lubrication of chainsaw cutting mechanisms working for wood gain and treatment. As the lubrication mechanism is an open system, all waste oil are thrown out into the surroundings. The problem of inserting into the environment hard to dissolve hydrocarbons is the reason for the attempts to study biodegradable oils, also vegetable oils. The physical and chemical properties of chosen mineral and vegetable oils, as well as their practical usefulness for cutting mechanism of chainsaws, are presented. The following oils: bio type Ecolube from Italy and Biotop from Germany, two commonly used mineral oils: Vexol Special and Pilar, as well as the manufactured oil Sinapis-Bio, produced on the base of oil from mustard production line. Obtained results showed that mustard oil, modified by fragmentary esterification, can be used as base for lubrication oil. Sinapis-Bio oil tested in practical application for cutting mechanism of chainsaws, obtained positive opinions as a lubrication product.
