abstract: The aim of the study presented in the paper was the determination of the contents and share of nitrogen in minerals as well as nitrogen and carbon in fractions achieved from acidic hydrolysis (at various hydrogen ions concentrations) in humus horizons of 11 brown soil types located in the Siedlce Upland. The location and classification of the soils is presented along with the general properties (clay content, pHKCl, Corg/Ntot, Corg/Ptot, humus content) of studied surface horizons. Investigated soils were classified as Luvisols and Cambisols developed from boulder loams of middle-Polish glaciation. Humus horizons were characterised by low organic matter content (14.3 g kg-1 on average), largely humified, slightly acidic pH, and mineral C/N and C/P ratios typical for arable soils. Percentage of mineral forms of nitrogen was 3.21% of its total resources at ammonium form surplus (1.94%). Mean share of nitrogen in organic forms soluble in 0.25 mol KCL dm-3 amounted to 1.09%. More nitrogen was found in hard-hydrolysing fraction (35.9% in Ntot) rather than in the readily-hydrolysing ones (28.0%, on average), while non-hydrolysing organic nitrogen made up 35% of the element resources. Similar contents of organic carbon were recorded in readily and hard-hydrolysing fractions (25.7 and 24.1 g kg-1, respectively), as well as the following C/N ratios: 8.32-6.67. The largest amounts of carbon (50.2% of resources, on average) and the widest C/N ratio (14.9) were found in the fraction that was resistant to acidic hydrolysis.
