abstract: The work presents the methodology used in the biological monitoring of forests, carried out since 1994 in order to assess the level and trends of changes in pollution of forest environment of Białowieża Primeval Forest. The method relies on chemical analysis of Schreber's big red stem moss Pleurozium schreberi as a biological indicator. Moss is collected annually from network of bio-indication plots. The content of heavy metals in the moss (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd) is determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrophotometry (ICP-OES). Analytical error, limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) for particular elements determined by the method are given. The level, direction of changes and spatial distribution of the accumulation of heavy metals in Pleurozium schreberi in the years of 1994-2009 are presented.
