abstract: The study area is the Umiew catchment covering 500 km2 in the area with the highest rainfalls in the world, reaching 12000 mm annually. The RMMF (Revised Morgan-Morgan-Finney) model is used in a GIS environment to assess soil loss. Annual soil erosion predicted by the model is moderate and ranges from 0 to 145 Mg ha-1 yr-1. The results show that soil loss rates are the lowest in the valley bottoms under rice cultivation – below 1 Mg ha-1 yr-1. The highest erosion rates are under potato cultivation on short and steep slopes with inclination up to 40o. The erosion rate of 5 Mg ha-1 yr-1 was estimated as upper limit of average annual soil loss under dense subtropical forest in the area of the highest rainfalls.
