abstract: The aim of the work was to determine the influence of initial treatment of cereal raw materials (wheat, barley, oats and maize grain) on pellet durability and hardness. The study was made for different tempering conditions: steam conditioning and cold conditioning. The research showed that the temperature of the hydrothermal treatment is the main factor determining pellet durability and hardness. The steam pressure is less important. Maximum pellet durability (more than 90%) was obtained for conditioning temperature levels above 70oC. Hardness of pellet increased with increase of the steam conditioning temperature (from 45.2 to 181.4 N cm-1), while the rise of moisture of material during cold conditioning caused the opposite result. The conditions of conditioning do not eliminate the differences in the values of this parameter resulting from the kind of material.
