Influence of anthropogenic platinum on environment

abstract: Platinum occurs naturally at very low concentrations. This situation is changing with the release of platinum-group-metals from automobile catalysts. Modern catalytic converters consist of a wash-coated cordierite monolith with Pt, Rh and/or Pd dispersed on the surface. Platinum and/or palladium are used to oxidize carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, rhodium must be present to reduce nitrogen oxides. The use of catalytic converters on automobile exhaust has a significant effect by eliminating about 90% of impurities, but leads to emission of platinum. Consequently the platinum concentration in road dust and in soils along heavily frequented roads is increasing.
