abstract: The research was carried out at the Experimental Station in Swadzim near Poznań, in the years 2000-2003. The objective was to determine the influence of the level nitrogen fertilization, the kind of fertilizer and the method of its application, on stimulation of maize initial growth, expressed by the accumulation of mineral components. The starter fertilization increased the content of nitrogen by about 0.64% and the content of phosphorus by about 0.02%, and decreased the content of potassium by about 0.36% and that of calcium by about 0.05% in dry mass of young maize plants, independently from weather conditions, level of nitrogen fertilization and the kind fertilizer. Starter fertilization had a positive affect on maize plants uptake, in the initial period of their development, of nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium, but limited the uptake of potassium and calcium, in comparison to traditional broadcast fertilization.
