abstract: The paper presents the evaluation of usefulness of 51 communes from Zamość region (within the limits of former province) for the cultivation of selected industrial plants: sugar beet, rape seed, tobacco, hop, flax and hemp. The soil conditions were estimated in maximum scores of an 85-point scale and agro-climate in a 15-point scale, due to the fact that soil is the main factor of natural habitats located in plain areas. The total score of the two elements was expressed in a form of “habitat conditions quality index”. On the basis of the index values, as well as of cultivation traditions, proposals were formulated concerning the cultivation of particular plants in the communes. The habitat conditions were the criterion for distinguishing five sub-regions in the Zamość region: eastern (including 11 communes), northern (9), north-western (11), south-western (9), and Roztocze (11).
