abstract: The field experiment involving red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) cultivated for fodder was carried out in 2002-2003 by means of randomized blocks in four replications. Two factors were studied in the experiment: 1. Clover cultivars (diploid Dajana cv. and tetraploid Bona cv.); 2. Pre-sowing seed stimulation with laser radiation with surface power density of divergent beam at the plane of free falling: R0 (with no radiation) and R3 and R6 mW cm-2, applied 1, 3 and 5 times. Seeds were irradiated with a He-Ne laser using the device designed by R. Koper and Z. Dygała. Following items were evaluated on each plot: filed emergence ability, plant density after emergence, per 1m2, number of shoots per 1m2, average dry matter of a single shoot, and the mean yields of green and dry matter. The laser radiation caused an increase of field emergence ability by 13.3% and 14.4%, respectively, in combinations R6x3 and R6x5. Bona cultivar was distinguished by significantly higher emergence ability. Radiation rates and cultivars also significantly differentiated the number of clover plants after emergence. Number of shoots per 1m2 was influenced only by radiation rate and cultivation year. The highest shoot density was found in object R6x1 (344 shoots m-2) and in 2002. The highest yields of green and dry matter were achieved in object R6x5. It was higher than corresponding values for the control variant (by 23.8% and 20.2%, respectively).
