Effect of mineral fertilization on ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata L.) yielding

abstract: Ribwort plantain is a valuable medicinal plant previously obtained from natural growth, but nowadays mainly from field plantations. Its raw material (Plantago lanceolatae Folium) is used as an anti-inflammatory, covering, expectoration, accelerating of healing and immunotropic agent. In spite of the increasing demand and raising interest in ribwort plantain cultivation, its agrotechnics is still not worked out in detail. In a field experiment conducted in 1998-2000 on brown soil there was examined the effect of different levels of mineral fertilisation on ribwort plantain yielding and quality parameters of plants in three consecutive years of vegetation. Four levels of mineral fertilisation were applied (as converted per 1 ha): control (N0P0K0); 30 kg N, 20 kg P, 40 kg K (N1P1K1); 60 kg N, 40 kg P, 80 kg K (N2P2K2); 90 kg N, 60 kg P, 120 kg K (N3P3K3). In Polish conditions ribwort plantain should be cultivated through one or two years – in the third year a significant decrease of plants yielding was observed. Plantain cultivation without mineral fertilisation application produced significantly lower yields of leaves, characterised however by the highest active substances content and better sanitation. Along with increasing mineral fertilisation level there was observed an increase of yields of leaves. It seems that optimal mineral fertilisation level in plantain cultivation on medium soil is the application of 180 kg NPKha-1. Further increase of the amount of fertilisers applied was connected with relatively small yielding increase but at the same time caused higher disease infestation of leaves.
