abstract: In a field experiment four methods of artichoke plantation establishment were compared: seeds sowing, seeds sowing and after that covering with ground-covers, transplants planting, transplants from multiplates planting. Two row spacings were used: 50 x 60 cm and 40 x 60 cm. Plants obtained from multiplates were characterized by intensive growth rate and the greatest number of leaves per plant. That variant of the experiment produced also the highest yields of herb containing the highest amount of active substances. Transplants planting caused a decrease of quality parameters and yields of artichoke herb. Higher yields of raw material, with high chlorogenic acid and flavonoids content, were obtained on plots with direct sowing of seeds. Additional 6-week covering with ground-covers accelerated seedling emergence, initial growth of plants and, as a result, similar as in the object with transplants from multiplates yields of raw material. Dense row spacing (40 x 60 cm) resulted in an increase of herb yields, but at the same time decreased active ingredients content.
