abstract: Conducted research showed that oil content in rapeseed in not fixed at a constant level, for a given variety, and evolves with the seeds ripening and thereafter. The seeds reach maximum content of oil upon achieving optimal maturity, while any delay in harvest decreases the oil content. Significant variations in the composition of fatty acids confirm that weather conditions are crucial parameters determining final quality of oil contained in the seeds (notably different weather conditions in the final stage of seed ripening in 2001, compared to those of 2002). Another very important and relevant factor affecting the composition of fatty acids was the date of the harvest. Accelerated harvest had a definitely negative impact, irrespective of variety and the year under analysis. All the examined varieties showed significant variance in the composition of fatty acids. Fatty acid composition of the “Contakt” variety indicates perfect application of procured oil in frying and petroleum (bio-diesel), as it features low level of poly-unsaturated acids and is rich in content of mono-unsaturated oleic acid. Such a situation should be encouraging for breeders to conduct research on development of new varieties for two purposes:
  • developing varieties for consumption – with high content of EUFA (Essential Unsaturated Fatty Acids).
  • developing varieties for bio-diesel – with high content of SAFA (Saturated Fatty Acids) and oleic acid.
