abstract: The study presented in this paper utilized results of measurements of the sums of atmospheric precipitation taken at the meteorological stations in Werbkowice and Zamość and results of phenological observations made on arable fields of the Zamość Region in the years 1976-1995. Based on the data the conditions of winter wheat vegetation were determined for the following periods: from spring start of vegetation to stalk shooting; from stalk shooting to earing and from earing to yellow ripeness. The research showed that the average sum of atmospheric precipitation in the period from spring start of vegetation to yellow ripeness of winter wheat was lower than the wheat requirements for water. Winter wheat water needs were satisfied to the least extent in periods from stalk shooting to earing (Zamość district – 91.5%) and from earing to yellow ripeness (Hrubieszów district 85.2%). Sums of atmospheric precipitation were bigger than winter wheat water needs in the 1st period from spring start of vegetation to stalk shooting (Zamość district 119.4%, Hrubieszów district 106.6%).
