abstract: The research was conducted in experimental apple orchard on Haplic Luvisol developed from silt formation. Polythene black foil and polypropylene black non-woven fabric mulch in tree rows were compared as methods of groundcover management systems. Morphological analysis of non-transparent soil blocks showed that soil aggregate structure in 0-10 cm layer of Ap horizon of soil under black foil was more favourable than those of soil under non-woven fabric. In 10-20 cm layer of Ap horizon and in Eet horizon (30-40 cm) of soil fine-pore structure with zoogenous channels predominated. Content of water-stable aggregates with 0.25-10 mm diameter in Ap (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm) and Eet horizon (30-40 cm) of soil under black foil mulch was very similar to aggregate content in soil under non-woven fabric. Field water capacity in Ap horizon of soil under black foil mulch was significantly greater in comparison to soil under non-woven fabric. Also content of mesopores of 0,2-20 μm and retention of useful water in soil under black foil were significantly greater than in soil under non-woven fabric.
