Influence of hull-less barley on selected physicochemical parameters in broiler chickens tibia bones

abstract: The experiment was carried out on 162 Cobb broiler chickens, divided into 3 groups: a control group (K) and two experimental groups (1 and 2). The control chickens were fed a mixture containing ground wheat, whilst in the experimental groups mixtures containing 45% of ground barley were applied: hull-less (1) or husked (2). On the 42nd day of age, 4 males and 4 females from each group were selected for further testing and tibia bones were excised. The weight, length, circumference, strength and mineral composition (Ca, Mg, P) of tibia bones were determined. The obtained results reveal that bones from broilers fed hull-less barley were slightly lighter and shorter. The species of grain significantly affected the circumference of tibia bones. The circumference of bones derived from chickens given barley was significantly lower compared to the broilers fed wheat. The bones of chicken fed hull-less barley were significantly more liable to break than the bones from broilers given husked barley. The investigated physical parameters depended on sex and were significantly higher in cockerels. In the bones derived from chickens fed hull-less barley the Ca content was significantly higher.
