abstract: In the years 2003-2006, at the Experimental Station in Tomaszkowo of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn a field experiment was carried out on the effectiveness of various methods of crop tending and nitrogen application for winter wheat cv. Rysa cultivated after winter wheat. The experiment was conducted with the method of split-plot randomised blocks, in 4 replications, on heavy brown soil ranked as a good wheat complex. The first experimental factor were different methods of crop tending (harrowing, harrowing x 2, herbicide, harrowing + herbicide). The second experimental factor were variants of methods of top dressing nitrogen application (135 kg N ha-1): 70 kg N ha-1 + 65 kg N ha-1, 70 kg N ha-1 + 25 kg N ha-1 + 40 kg N ha-1 and 70 kg N ha-1 + 25 kg N ha-1 (foliar) + 40 kg N ha-1. The field experiment was carried out in conditions of medium weed infestation of winter wheat in the first year and high infestation in the second and third years of the experiment. The following species of weeds were found to predominate in wheat: Viola arvensis, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Veronica arvensis, Stellaria media, Matricaria maritima subsp. inodora, Galium aparine. The highest effectiveness of weed control was provided by the application of the mechanical-chemical method (harrowing + herbicide), ca. 90% on average, followed by the application of herbicide alone (ca. 82% on average). Harrowing, as a weeding process, appeared to be ineffective, especially when applied once (ca. 32% on average). The method of nitrogen application did not exert any significant effect on the effectiveness of winter wheat weed control.
