abstract: Soil moisture is one of the key factors which influence the water and energy cycle of Earth. Global measurement of soil moisture is the mission goal of the SMOS satellite which is scheduled to be launched in late 2009. Data from this mission need to be validated. For this purpose two vegetation indexes, LAI and fCover, were investigated in the study presented in this paper. Those indexes allow estimation of water bound in plant layers. LAI and fCover were computed for the Western Polesie region from MERIS spectrometer satellite data. For further analysis four different areas were chosen: wetland, forest, meadow and cultivated fields. For these areas mean value, median, standard deviation, skewness and kurtosis were computed. Those statistical measures were computed to compare variables obtained in SMOS pixel scale (35 km) and MERIS scale (300 m). The statistics provided information about vegetation covering the investigated regions, its structure and diversity. The biggest LAI value was observed in the forest, while the smallest was observed on the cultivated fields, after harvest. The biggest fCover index was observed on the meadow. For the chosen areas the relation between LAI and fCover was sought and its interdependence is going to be used in land cover clas-sification, which would be very helpful in further SMOS validation.
