abstract: The paper presents the results of experimental works aimed at providing an explanation of the mechanism of the formation of localised strain inside a bulk solid during silo emptying. The Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to explain the mechanism of the formation of localised strain in flowing sand during silo emptying, both along the silo walls and at the silo width. Experiments were performed for mass and funnel flow silos, for different initial densities and wall roughness. The influence of silo emptying velocity (gravitational and controlled flow) was taken into account. The results obtained indicated that the width of localised strain changes during silo emptying and that the mechanism of its formation is similar irrespective of the initial conditions and the shape of the silo.
