abstract: Method of filling a soil aggregate bed with Wood’s alloy, preparation of cross sections and determination of macropores by means of image analysis is presented. Application of Wood’s alloy in liquid state (at temperature of ~80-90oC) and then its hardening allow precise identification of the size and shape of inter-aggregate pores. Opaqueness and high surface tension of the alloy allow obtaining a good optical contrast between macropores and soil. Cumulative distribution of macropore radius between soil aggregates on cross sections by means of image analysis package has been determined. Important feature of the presented method is the independence of the obtained pore size distribution on Wood’s alloy surface tension and wetting angle between the alloy and soil aggregates.
