abstract: Current status and prospects of production development of seeds of native legume species are presented in the paper. Cropping area, production values and seed yields were taken into account in the analysis. Also the balance of seed utilization and profitability of legume plants cultivation in comparison to cereals was worked out. The paper specifies the prospects of legume plants cultivation for seeds. Analysis of the presented data shows that the cultivation area of legumes in Poland decreased during the last years from 150 to 110 thousand hectares, although it had remained on a stable level over the last decade. This change concerns first of all fodder varieties of legumes. Seeds export also decreased drastically. In 2003 about 16 thousand tonnes of seeds was exported, which amounted to only about 5% of the export value from 1999. At the same time there is a great deficit of plant proteins. Legume seeds cover about 10% of Polish demand for these materials. Profitability of legume cultivation in Poland is lower than in other EU countries, which results from the higher direct subsidies and higher prices in those countries. The accession of Poland to the EU will probably not improve the profitability of legume cultivation in Poland considering the adopted simplified system of direct subsidies.
