abstract: The nitrogen content in root zone and nutritional status of tomato grown in slabs made of rye straw under glass were investigated. Substrate and root zone nutrient solutions were analysed. The electrical conductivity (EC), substrate salinity, pH, N-NO3 and N-NH4 determined in slab nutrient solution and in substrate did not differ significantly. The content of nitrate nitrogen, both in nutrient solution and in substrate, was low (less than 20 mg dm-3) and it was rising from the 7th week of growing. At the and of cultivation period, N content in nutrient solution and in substrate amounted to 300 and 400 mg dm-3, respectively. For the whole period of growing, the content of N-NH4 in the nutrient solution and in the substrate was low and amounted to less then 16 mg dm-3. Even though the content of nitrogen in substrate was low, the nutrition status of plant was good.
