abstract: The research was carried out in Experimental Station in Bezek (near Chełm) in years 1999-2001. Its aim was to investigate the effect of various ways of postharvest and pre-winter tillage, including the use of subsoiler, as well as sprinkling on the sugar beet infestation. The experiment was located on the mixed rendzina formed from chalky gaize with medium silty loam granulometric composition. Its scheme took into account two water variants: W0 (without sprinkling) and W1 (with sprinkling) as well as 4 ways of tillage: a – skimming + harowing, pre-winter ploughing covering farmyard manure, b – cultivating + harrowing, pre–winter ploughing, c – skimming + harowing, subsoiling, shallowed pre-winter ploughing, d – cultivating + harowing, subsoiling, shallowed pre-winter ploughing. The estimation of secondary weed infestation of sugar beet was done each year in the first half of September by quantitative and weight method. Species composition, number and dry mass of weeds per 1 m–2 were determined. It was stated that the sprinkling did not significantly increase secondary infestation of sugar beet, in spite of the tendincy in increase of both the number and dry mass of the weeds on the sprinkling objects. From the point of view of sugar beet infestation the method of tillage depending on cultivation, subsoiling and shallowed pre-winter ploughing seems much better in comparison with other variants. This method of tillage not only significantly redused the number of weeds, including the perennial ones, but also eliminated a few segetal species from the weed community.
