abstract: In recent years researches on biodegradable packaging materials of vegetable origin have been started in many R&D centres. The extrusion-cooking technique has been found to be a very useful one. So called thermoplastic starch (TPS) is used to produce biodegradable films and stiff forms of packaging. Extrusion-cooked mixture of potato starch, glycerol and additional functional components, such as fibres and emulgators, can be successfully processed in plastic extruders and popular injection moulding machines. For years we have been involved with the application of baro-thermal techniques in processing of TPS at the Department of Food Process Engineering, Lublin University of Agriculture. In the paper the main engineering and technological aspects are presented, which can be helpful in such investigations. Final part of the paper relates to results of biodegradability tests. The whole presentation is based on results of experiments made.
